Do We Need a Real Piano for Lessons?

Keyboard vs. Piano for Beginners

Watch: Ms. Renae answers our most-asked question in under a minute.

It’s the question almost every parent asks before booking: “Do we need a real piano, or can we start with a keyboard?” The answer might surprise you – and it can save you a lot of stress (and money) while your student discovers their love for music.

For most beginners, a keyboard is absolutely fine – as long as it has a few key features. You don’t need to invest in an acoustic piano right away. What matters most is consistency and a positive early experience.

What to Look for in a Keyboard:

  • At least 61 keys (touch-sensitive keys are ideal)
  • weighted or semi-weighted keys if budget allows, to build finger strength
  • Avoid small “toy” keyboards with mini keys and no touch response

If your child has been playing for 2+ years, or has graduated book 1, it’s a beautiful upgrade. Our friends at Cordagan’s Pianoland are very helpful! If you are looking for something more budget friendly, Facebook Marketplace often has decent pianos for sale. They just might need a little TLC. If you already own a well-maintained acoustic piano, you are already set! If your piano needs some love before starting lessons, we recommend reaching out to a piano technician. Pianos are wonderful, but they are never a requirement to begin piano lessons with us.

At Rae of Sunshine Music, our traveling teachers work with both setups. We’ve seen students flourish on a basic keyboard, and we’ve seen the joy of a family upright piano. What matters when starting piano lessons isn’t the instrument – it’s the consistent, in-home lessons with a teacher who understands your child and how they learn. Of course, when your student has passed the basics and is learning the more detailed and nuanced techniques, a good piano is really fun to play on.

Have more questions about getting started with piano lessons? We’d love to chat. You can see if our traveling teachers serve your area in Fox Valley or Kewanee.
